Karen Sund Textured Architectural Cityscape
Original oil on stretched canvas by Karen Sund (American, active late 1960s–1970s), signed and inscribed verso. The inscription indicates creation during the 1969–1970 academic year, an early period in Sund’s development. This striking cityscape features layered facades and stairways rendered in warm ochre, sienna, and cream tones with vivid green accents. Thick impasto and palette-knife technique give the surface a sculptural, dimensional presence reminiscent of aged plaster and Mediterranean architecture.
Later documentation places Sund in a 1972 exhibition of feminist-themed works exploring women’s identity in the workplace, connecting this early architectural study to the structural and conceptual foundations of her mature art. Framed in its original oak frame without glass, this painting captures the balance of geometry and texture that defines Sund’s emerging modernist voice.
Condition
In good vintage condition, showing light, stable craquelure and minor surface wear consistent with age. Paint layers are secure and colors remain vibrant. Oak frame shows slight edge wear but presents attractively overall. Ready to hang.
