Description

Mini Wakan Bde Hand-Painted Rawhide Parfleche Box
Signed “Mini Wakan Bde” (translated as “Sacred/Spirit Lake”)

A fusion of artistry and heritage, this hand-painted rawhide parfleche box bears the inscription Mini Wakan Bde, meaning “Sacred Lake” in the Dakota language. The phrase resonates deeply within Dakota cosmology, recalling Bde Wakan Otunwe—the Dakota of Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota—and the Mni Wakan Oyate (Spirit Lake People) of North Dakota. In both traditions, water is wakáŋ—sacred, alive, and powerful.

Handcrafted from leather and trimmed in bold red felt with laced edging, the box displays a vivid palette of blue, green, ochre, and russet. The interlocking diamonds and hourglass patterns speak in the timeless geometry of the Plains—designs that once guided hands and hearts through generations. Each brushstroke honors a lineage of Dakota and Lakota women artists who transformed functional containers into expressions of beauty, balance, and identity.

Today, this piece stands as both artwork and testament—a continuation of cultural memory rendered in color and hide. It invites the viewer to feel, not only to see: the hum of the brush on rawhide, the quiet precision of hands keeping tradition alive.

Condition:
Good condition with no tears or holes. Minor paint transfer and a small area of wear on the left top side of the leather. Structure and color remain strong, with light handling consistent with handcrafted work.

Dimensions:
7.75" H × 10.5" W × 7.75" D
Leather construction with felt corners and rawhide ties.
Campbell’s Soup can shown for scale.

Parfleche art represents one of the most enduring Plains visual languages, where color and geometry communicate balance, harmony, and identity. The inscription Mini Wakan Bde directly connects this piece to the Dakota worldview, in which water (mní) is sacred (wakáŋ), and lakes (bdé) are living spiritual entities. The work thus stands not only as a decorative object but also as a continuation of Dakota material and spiritual heritage, bridging past and present in painted hide form.
