Mid-Century Mexican Tooled Leather Stool – Folk Art River Scene
Charming mid-20th century handcrafted Mexican stool featuring a solid wood base and a tooled leather top with an intricate folk-art river scene. The kidney-shaped seat is richly hand-tooled with two figures navigating small rafts beneath mountain ranges, surrounded by stylized vegetation and cactus motifs—imagery characteristic of traditional Mexican talabartería (leather tooling). The scalloped leather edge is accented with large brass dome tacks, lending an authentic rustic appeal.
This stool exemplifies mid-century Mexican craftsmanship, blending practical woodworking with artisan leatherwork. Pieces of this type were often produced in central Mexico during the 1940s–1950s. A decorative and functional accent, ideal as a footstool, plant stand, or conversation piece in rustic or eclectic settings.
Condition
Good overall condition, showing finish wear and light discoloration consistent with age and use. The leather top exhibits some water stains and natural surface wear, while the wooden legs retain their warm tone with minor finish loss. Structurally solid and stable, displaying appealing patina throughout.
