Ramona Tapia Santa Clara Redware Pot & Plate Set, Signed
Signed Ramona Tapia (1940–2003), Santa Clara Pueblo, this hand-coiled redware pottery set includes a small pot and a matching plate. Each features a smooth, stone-polished red slip with painted cream and tan designs—applied in a fine slip to create soft contrast against the rich red clay. The harmonious forms and balanced decoration demonstrate Tapia’s steady craftsmanship and artistic restraint.
Active from the 1970s through early 2000s, Tapia exhibited at the Santa Fe Indian Market and is listed in Gregory Schaaf’s Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies. Though best known for blackware, she also created redware with painted or slipped motifs, as shown in this rare small-scale example.
Condition:
Good condition overall, showing finish wear, some slip loss, and light shelf wear consistent with age. Signature “Ramona Tapia / Santa Clara” visible on the underside.
Dimensions:
- Pot: 2 ¼ in. height × 2 ½ in. diameter
- Plate: ¾ in. height × 3 in. diameter
(Quarter shown for scale.)
Provenance & Notes:
Ramona Tapia (1940–2003) was an accomplished Santa Clara Pueblo potter connected to the Naranjo and Tafoya families. She was active from the 1970s to early 2000s and exhibited widely in New Mexico.
