Mid-20th C. Mexican Child’s Equipal Loveseat – Hand-Decorated
Child’s-size Mexican equipal loveseat, from Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco, mid-20th century. Curved pigskin seat and back over the traditional interlaced wooden lattice with rawhide lashings. The interior back is hand-inked with folk scenes—a vaquero on horseback, cacti, and village houses—framed by geometric borders. The form and materials follow the long western-Mexican tradition whose name comes from the Náhuatl icpalli (“seat/throne”). Compact and authentic, it serves as a whimsical accent for Southwestern/ranch interiors or a folk-art collection; sturdy and usable while showing an appealing aged surface.
Condition:
Fair overall. Section of pigskin absent to the seat, with additional tears and losses to the back (see photos). Scattered punctures, dryness and surface wear to leather; age to rawhide lashings and wood. Frame remains sturdy and usable. Displays well.
Size:
Seat: 9.5" H x 20" W x 9" D
Overall: 15" H x 25" W x 13" D
Weight: 6 lbs 5 oz
