1970s Quality Billiards “Pace-Maker” Pool Table — Coin-Op Converted to Free Play, Single Slate
This Quality Billiards Mfg. Co. “Pace-Maker” pool table, produced in Gardena, California during the 1970s, represents the rugged craftsmanship and functional design of America’s commercial billiard era. Built for coin-operated use and later converted to free play, this model retains its original ball-return system, heavy-duty hardware, and single-piece slate bed—a preferred feature for consistent play and long-term stability.
The cabinet is finished in walnut laminate with chrome and brushed-aluminum trim, complemented by a red felt playing surface typical of mid-century recreation style. A 1962–63 Woman’s International Bowling Congress Achievement Award plaque remains mounted to the front panel, providing a direct connection to its likely origin in a California club or bowling center.
Included with the table is a Brunswick Bowling & Billiard Equipment cue rack and a selection of vintage cues, several retaining their original Brunswick markings. Together, they complete an authentic period display consistent with 1970s commercial billiard installations.
Quality Billiards Mfg. Co. was a respected Southern California maker active through the 1960s and 1970s, known for producing robust, high-performance coin-op tables. The firm closed in the early 1980s, and surviving examples—especially with single-slate construction—are increasingly difficult to find.
Condition
In very good vintage condition. The red felt appears clean and recently replaced. Metal trim and laminate surfaces show light wear and patina from age. Ball-return and free-play mechanisms operate properly. Cue rack and cues show expected cosmetic wear consistent with age and use.
