Description

Melchor Hybrid Animal Oaxacan Alebrije — Hand-Carved & Painted Wood Sculpture

Bursting with color and imagination, this hand-carved and hand-painted wooden alebrije by Melchor of Mitla, Oaxaca, embodies the whimsical artistry for which Mexico’s folk carvers are celebrated. Signed on the underside “Melchor Mitla Oax”, the piece represents a fantastical hybrid creature — a lively fusion of mouse and canine traits. The figure’s mouse-like face, upright ears, and expressive open mouth lend it charm and character, while its elongated, dog-like body and raised tail convey motion and vitality.

Painted in radiant cobalt blue with accents of turquoise, magenta, and multicolored dots, the surface displays meticulous stippling and fine brushwork distinctive to Mitla’s artisan tradition. Melchor’s confident carving and intricate detail transform local copal wood into a being that feels both playful and spirited — a vibrant expression of Oaxaca’s living folklore.

In Oaxacan culture, alebrijes are dream-creatures, bridging the line between the real and the imagined. This compact yet captivating example reflects that legacy beautifully, offering collectors a piece of artistry infused with color, culture, and creativity.
