Alphée Dubois Solid Silver Medal, 1935, Boxed
Ministère de l’Instruction Publique, Oran (Algeria)
A substantial and beautifully detailed solid silver medal by master French medallist Alphée Dubois (1831–1905), struck for the Ministère de l’Instruction Publique (Ministry of Public Education). Executed in heavy, high-grade silver, the obverse features a classically draped allegorical figure of Knowledge holding a book marked “COURS D’ADULTES” beside the motto “QUI N’ACQUIERT POINT PERD” (“He who acquires nothing, loses all”). The reverse, framed by laurel branches, is engraved:
“COURS D’ADULTES – M. RICHE ALPHONSE – ORAN (ORAN) – 1935.”
Struck in solid silver and stamped “ARGENT” with the official French boar’s head assay mark, confirming Paris origin and high purity, this medal weighs an impressive 61.93 grams. Its considerable mass and fineness give it significant intrinsic metal value, while the sharply modeled relief and fine finish reflect the precision of Monnaie de Paris production. Signed ALPHÉE DUBOIS at lower right.
Still housed in its original red silk and velvet presentation case, this award medal combines precious metal substance with historic and artistic merit—appealing to both bullion-minded collectors and connoisseurs of French medallic art.
Condition
Very good, showing light toning and minor surface marks consistent with age. Relief remains crisp and deeply defined. The fitted red case retains its clasp and lining with minimal wear.
