Description

🕊️ Pius XII 950 Silver Medal — Catacombs of St. Callistus, Rome, Boxed

A finely struck 950 silver commemorative medal issued for the Catacombs of St. Callistus (Catacombe di S. Callisto) in Rome, one of early Christianity’s most sacred burial sites. The obverse portrays The Good Shepherd, symbol of Christ’s mercy and resurrection, surrounded by the legend “CATACOMBE DI S. CALLISTO – ROMA.” This image echoes the third-century frescoes found within the actual catacombs, where early believers gathered and buried their dead in secrecy during times of persecution.

The reverse presents the dignified profile of Pope Pius XII (PIVS XII PONT MAX), who led the Catholic Church through the trials of World War II and the early modern era. Together, the two sides bridge the faith’s ancient origins and its twentieth-century spiritual leadership. Struck in high-purity 950 silver, the medal weighs 30.32 grams and measures 1 9/16 inches in diameter, with deep relief and warm toning that enhance its sculptural depth.

Housed in its original fitted case, lined with cream silk and red velvet and stamped Catacombe S. Callisto – Roma, this medal was likely sold only to pilgrims visiting the catacombs—a site that preserves the tombs of early popes and martyrs. A tangible link between the underground faith of the first Christians and the enduring witness of the modern papacy.

Condition

Very good overall, showing natural patina and light surface marks consistent with age. Relief details remain sharp and expressive. The original presentation case shows minor exterior wear and interior discoloration but remains intact and functional.
