Description

Vintage Thrifty “The Wise Pig” Cast Iron Still Bank, ca. 1930s — J.M.R. / Hubley

Charming early 20th-century cast-iron still bank titled “The Wise Pig,” depicting a smiling seated pig holding a sign that reads:
“The Wise Pig / Save a penny yesterday / Another save today / Tomorrow save another / To keep the wolf away.”

This whimsical and moralizing verse reflects Depression-era thrift values, encouraging saving as a safeguard against hard times. The bank is attributed to J.M.R., circa 1930–1935, with some sources suggesting production by or for Hubley Manufacturing Co. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The pig stands on a base often inscribed “Thrifty,” its design and message celebrating the virtue of frugality. Cast in solid iron with a rear coin slot and flat-head screw closure at the base, this example retains much of its original yellow-tan paint with traces of red and black detailing.

Historical Context
Produced in the early 1930s, this bank exemplifies the era’s domestic thrift culture — teaching children and adults alike to save small amounts regularly. The verse “to keep the wolf away” alludes to fending off financial hardship, a message especially poignant during the Great Depression. Similar examples marked “Copyright J.M.R.” appear in period catalogs and are closely associated with the Hubley foundry tradition of Pennsylvania cast-iron craftsmanship.

Condition
Good, with age-appropriate wear and finish loss throughout consistent with age and handling. Surface oxidation and paint wear visible on raised areas and base edges. The coin slot and screw closure remain intact and functional. No major cracks or structural repairs observed. Displays well with authentic vintage patina.
