Sylvia A. Hendrickson Gourd Art Figure
Handcrafted by Las Cruces gourd artist Sylvia A. Hendrickson, this striking sculpture is a signed example of her expressive natural-material artistry. The figure is formed from a hand-painted dried gourd, richly finished in deep maroon and brown tones, and mounted on a circular wood base. The head is adorned with an elaborate arrangement of iridescent feathers, while the shoulders are draped in a fringed black leather cape. Accented with strands of multicolored glass beads in green, red, and black, the figure holds a small wooden bowl containing dried organic elements.
Hendrickson, known for her Las Cruces-based “Sylvia’s Gourds” studio, is celebrated for transforming natural gourds into vibrant sculptural forms through carving, painting, and embellishment with feathers and beads. This signed example beautifully represents her Southwest-inspired folk-art aesthetic and attention to organic form and texture—a distinctive addition to any art or gourd collection.
