Description

Ramos Filemón Hand-Painted Folk Art Wall Rack – Repurposed Antique Shutter

Colorful hand-painted wooden wall rack by Ramos Filemón, a noted Mexican folk artist from the Guanajuato region known for transforming reclaimed wood into vibrant devotional and domestic scenes. This richly detailed piece is crafted from a repurposed antique shutter and features a charming still life of fruits and kitchen objects, including a molcajete, gourd, papaya, watermelon, milk bottle, and apples. The composition is framed by scrolling floral motifs in red, blue, and gold, exemplifying Filemón’s distinctive rustic style. His signature, “Ramos Filemón,” appears near the top of the painted panel.

Mounted with four turned wooden hooks (each approximately 1″ thick), the rack serves as both functional decor and authentic folk artistry. Pieces by Filemón—often painted on reclaimed wood panels and door fragments—are recognized for their bold color palette, stylized forms, and connection to traditional Mexican craft heritage. Likely created in the late 20th century, this example captures the lively vernacular spirit of Mexican domestic art.

Condition:

Good, authentically rustic condition with age-appropriate wear. Paint loss, small chips, and surface abrasions are visible, consistent with use and age. The painted imagery remains vivid, and the wooden frame is solid. Wall-mountable with two metal hangers affixed to the back.

Dimensions:

Overall: 12 ⅛″ H × 33 ⅝″ W × 5 ⅜″ D
Hooks: Approximately 1″ thick
(Soup can shown for scale.)

Provenance & Notes:

Ramos Filemón’s works originate primarily from Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, where he is known for hand-painted wooden panels and retablos crafted from salvaged materials.

This wall rack represents an uncommon, functional form within Filemón’s body of work—an appealing blend of artistry and utility ideal for kitchen, entryway, or folk art display.
