Description

Pennsylvania Dutch Cupboard — Late 19th/Early 20th C.

A cupboard in the Pennsylvania Dutch folk art tradition, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The front panels are richly decorated with stylized tulips, hearts, and floral motifs in classic mustard, red, and blue tones — emblematic of Pennsylvania German decorative arts. Constructed with a paneled back and fitted with forged iron handles, the piece features two fixed open shelves (approximately 11.25" and 11" high) above double cabinet doors that conceal an open storage compartment. The contrasting deep teal back and scalloped apron reflect the craftsmanship typical of rural Pennsylvania workshops.

An evocative example of American folk design, this cupboard captures the warmth and authenticity of the Pennsylvania Dutch aesthetic — a striking blend of utility and artistry.

Condition

Good condition overall with finish wear, surface scuffs, and scattered paint loss consistent with age and use. A small chip is visible along the bottom trim. Structurally stable with an appealing patina that highlights its hand-painted character.
