Description

Early 20th C. Oak Washstand with Paneled Back & Towel Bar

A beautifully crafted early 20th-century oak washstand, embodying the quiet dignity of American domestic life before indoor plumbing. Constructed from solid quarter sawn oak with striking tiger-grain figuring, this piece features a paneled back topped with a graceful towel bar, a single drawer with carved pulls, and a two-door storage cabinet below. Originally designed to hold a basin and pitcher on its surface, with towels hung neatly above, and water or chamber pots stored below, the form captures the transition between the Victorian bedroom and the modern bathroom.

The craftsmanship—visible in the mortise joinery, paneled doors, and warm finish—reflects an age when even utilitarian furnishings were made with artistry. Today, it serves beautifully as a sideboard, entry cabinet, or decorative accent, offering both storage and timeless appeal.

Condition:

Good overall, showing signs of age and use. Minor surface marks, wear to finish, and expected scuffing consistent with age. Drawer and doors open smoothly, structurally solid throughout.

Dimensions:

56" H x 30.25" W x 18.25" D
(Interior storage height: approx. 17")
Bob Ross standee shown in final image for scale.
