Artist Biography

Miguel Varela (20th–21st century, Texas and Mexico) is a painter and printmaker recognized for his emotive depictions of Southwestern and Indigenous subjects. Working primarily in pastel, watercolor, and limited-edition prints, Varela’s art emphasizes cultural identity and human warmth through soft tonal modeling and natural palettes. His works have circulated in regional galleries and collector markets, with limited-edition prints such as Carmelo (1990) among his best-known images. Varela’s compositions reflect a deep respect for heritage and remain sought after for their expressive realism and quiet dignity.

An Artist’s Proof (A.P.) is a limited subset of a print edition, typically retained by the artist and issued in very small numbers. These impressions are especially valued for their rarity and direct connection to the artist.
