Description

Gina Gray “Medicine Deer Seek the Spirit Ponies” Monotype

Rendered with the meditative restraint and layered luminosity that defined her late period, “Medicine Deer Seek the Spirit Ponies” is an exceptional monotype by Osage artist Gina Gray, created at the esteemed Graphics Workshop Santa Fe. Within a field of indigo, slate, and muted gold, Gray conjures ethereal forms of deer and ponies—creatures of intuition and passage—caught between visibility and transcendence. The surface bears the subtle imprint of motion, each line a gesture of spiritual seeking, each veil of pigment a whisper of transformation.

Blending the poetics of Osage cosmology with modernist abstraction, Gray’s print resonates with profound stillness and energy—a dialogue between earth and sky, body and spirit. It is both visionary and grounded, intimate and mythic, emblematic of her mastery of the monotype form.

Artist Biography

Gina Gray (1954–2014) was a pioneering voice in contemporary Native American art whose work bridges cultural heritage and modern visual language. Trained at the Institute of American Indian Arts and California Institute of the Arts, Gray emerged from Santa Fe’s vibrant art scene as a leading figure in Indigenous expression. Her compositions, celebrated for their gestural rhythm and symbolic resonance, have been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Heard Museum, and the Osage Nation Museum, which held a major retrospective of her work in 2017. Gray’s practice—anchored in activism, spirituality, and the enduring power of storytelling—continues to inspire a new generation of artists.

Condition

In good condition overall. The artwork remains pristine beneath glass; minor scuffing to the glass surface and a trace of debris behind the glazing do not detract from its presentation. The frame shows light wear consistent with careful display.
