Gerz “Tanz auf der Alm” German Beer Stein – 16” Relief, Aluminum Lid
Large hand-painted German beer stein by Gerz, featuring the traditional “Tanz auf der Alm” (“Dance on the Alpine Meadow”) motif in richly colored relief. The scene depicts Bavarian villagers dancing and socializing beneath a tree, rendered in deep cobalt blue, green, and ochre glazes. The stein retains its original aluminum lid with ornate thumb lift and detailed border trim.
The base bears the impressed Gerz triangular mark and “Made in Germany” stamp, identifying production from the Westerwald region, likely between the 1950s and 1970s. The Tanz auf der Alm design was a long-standing Gerz favorite, representing the firm’s continuation of 19th-century stoneware traditions. Gerz, established in 1835, was one of Germany’s premier stein makers, known for high-quality relief work and fine glazing.
This 16-inch example is among the larger sizes produced and an impressive decorative and collectible piece of postwar German craftsmanship—ideal for breweriana or folk art enthusiasts.
