Álvaro de la Cruz Signed 26.5" Hand-Painted Terra Cotta Catrina Sculpture – Día de los Muertos

Magnificent and fully signed Álvaro de la Cruz hand-painted terra cotta Catrina sculpture, crafted in Capula, Michoacán, Mexico — the renowned center of Mexican clay folk art. Measuring an impressive 26½ inches in height, this striking figure depicts the elegant skeletal lady of Día de los Muertos, dressed in a flowing burgundy gown with black and copper floral motifs and a broad-brimmed feathered hat. The head is removable, a traditional hallmark of de la Cruz’s Catrina designs.

Álvaro de la Cruz López is celebrated for his richly detailed and expressive figures that combine reverence and humor, embodying the essence of Mexican cultural identity. His works appear in fine folk art collections and galleries worldwide. This example, signed clearly on the back, exemplifies his distinctive craftsmanship and sculptural finesse.

Condition:

Good condition overall, with expected signs of age and handling. Chips present on the face and neck, and repairs noted to the right hand and jaw. Minor chips on the hat have been touched up. Structure remains solid, and all decorative paintwork retains vivid color and definition.
