Description

Ugone & Thomas 1998 Hand-Painted Lamp – Ceramic Shade, Slate Base

Distinctive Ugone & Thomas hand-painted table lamp, signed and dated 1998 on the ceramic shade. The wide flared shade features olive branch and amphora motifs over a geometric band of abstract and landscape elements, rendered in rich ochres, greens, and deep plum. Crafted with a .5" copper column and .75" thick slate base, the lamp showcases the studio’s hallmark blend of natural materials and whimsical sculptural metalwork, including a fish, leaf, and spiral detail at the stem and a stylized finial above.

Equipped with a double fixture allowing either one or both bulbs to be lit through a three-way inline switch, this lamp exemplifies Ugone & Thomas’ celebrated approach to artisanal American lighting—where functional design meets hand-painted fine art. A remarkable statement piece for collectors and interiors favoring crafted, narrative design.

Condition

In excellent, fully functional condition, tested and working properly. Minor scuffing and the slightest signs of age-related wear to the base and metal surfaces. Shade remains vibrant and clean with no chips or structural flaws. Original wiring and switch intact and operational.

Provenance & Context

Janna Ugone & Co. (later Ugone & Thomas) is a Massachusetts-based studio founded in 1987, renowned for hand-painted and sculptural lighting that merges art and function. Similar designs retail through contemporary studio outlets, with early hand-painted originals like this commanding strong interest among collectors of American studio craft.
