Oaxacan Pig Alebrije – Hand-Carved Folk Art Sculpture
This boldly painted pig alebrije is a colorful example of traditional Oaxacan folk art, hand-carved and hand-painted from copal wood. Its lively floral surface pattern—red blossoms and green vines set against a speckled black ground—reflects the imaginative artistry for which San Martín Tilcajete is renowned. Expressive eyes, pink-tipped udders, and bright facial accents give the piece strong visual personality and charm.
Carved and painted by an unknown artisan, this work embodies the region’s playful and symbolic approach to animal figures, blending creativity and cultural tradition into a dynamic sculptural form.
Condition:
Good overall condition, with visible cracking and a repaired line along the head and body. Tail and one udder appear absent. Minor scuffs and surface wear consistent with age and handling. Presents well for display.
Size:
Overall: 12" H × 15½" L × 6½" W
Weight: 7 lbs 9 oz
