Description

Afghan Maimana Kilim Rug – 5.2 x 11.6 ft, 1970s–80s Handwoven Wool

This is a handwoven Maimana kilim from northern Afghanistan, dating to circa 1975–1985. Measuring approximately 5.2 x 11.6 feet, it is crafted in the traditional flat-weave technique from goat and sheep wool, producing a strong, reversible textile. The design features repeating geometric diamond and cross motifs, bordered by narrow patterned bands, in a warm palette of terracotta, rust, ivory, gold, brown, and muted greens. Its elongated form makes it ideal for a hallway, gallery space, or as a dramatic centerpiece.

Maimana kilims originate from the weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan, where Uzbek and Turkmen influences shaped their distinctive style. These rugs are admired for their durability, bold yet harmonious colors, and the timeless continuity of their geometric patterns, which have changed little over centuries. Vintage examples like this one are valued for their authenticity and connection to traditional village weaving practices.

Condition:
Good vintage condition overall. A 1" x 1.5" hole is present near the center of the rug, and areas of discoloration are visible (all shown in the photos). There is also minor fraying and age-related wear along seams and edges. Despite these flaws, the rug remains structurally sound and retains strong visual appeal.

Dimensions:
Approximately 5.2 ft x 11.6 ft
