Felix Ortiz Mata Ortiz Blackware Deer Effigy Vessel
A finely crafted blackware deer effigy vessel by Felix Ortiz, one of the pioneering master potters of Mata Ortiz, Mexico. Hand-built and signed “Felix Ortiz” on the base, this piece demonstrates the hallmark burnished black-on-black finish for which the region is known. Its form is sculptural yet graceful: the deer’s upright ears and poised head give it presence, while the body is intricately etched with geometric and abstract designs that shimmer subtly against the polished surface. Measuring 6.5 x 9 x 5 inches, it stands as both vessel and sculpture.
Felix Ortiz belonged to the important early generation of Mata Ortiz potters, working in the El Porvenir Barrio. Beginning in the 1970s, he helped transform a local tradition into an internationally celebrated art movement by blending inspiration from ancient Casas Grandes (Paquimé) ceramics with bold contemporary forms. Ortiz became especially admired for his effigy work — giving animal forms like this deer both vitality and cultural depth. He continued creating until his passing in 2005, and today, his signed pieces remain highly sought after by collectors who value their rarity, artistry, and place in the story of Mata Ortiz.
From a fine New Mexico collection of Mata Ortiz pottery, this deer effigy offers not just a work of clay, but a work of history — a chance to own a piece shaped by one of the movement’s foundational hands.
