Description

Paty Ortiz Mata Ortiz Pottery Vase – Marbled Clay, Rabbits & Geometric Design

A striking hand-built Mata Ortiz pottery vase signed by Paty Ortiz. This rounded vessel with flared rim showcases Ortiz’s signature use of barro mezclado (marbled clay), where swirling layers of different clays create a richly textured surface. Over this background, she has painted an intricate checkerboard pattern, flanked by stylized geometric panels and circular medallions featuring rabbits, a motif often associated with the Mimbres and Paquimé traditions. The combination of ancient-inspired iconography with meticulous, contemporary design demonstrates Ortiz’s technical mastery and artistic vision.

Paty Ortiz (b. 1972) learned her craft from her father, Salvador Ortiz, and her uncle, Macario Ortiz. She is recognized as one of the Mata Ortiz potters who have perfected the challenging marbled clay technique, skillfully merging different clays into a harmonious finished work. Her pottery has been exhibited in Mata Ortiz and Tlaquepaque competitions, and her works are represented in galleries and private collections internationally. Auction records confirm her growing presence in the collectible market, with comparable pieces fetching strong results.

A fine example of contemporary Mata Ortiz artistry, this vase would serve as a centerpiece for any collection of Southwestern or Native-inspired pottery.
