Navajo Rug, “Mexican Water” Tag, Geometric, c.1975
Navajo wool rug, tagged “Tom Lee – Mexican Water – 1975,” in a classic trading-post geometric layout. Serrated diamonds and stepped crosses run in horizontal bands on a creamy ground, framed by a bold black border with mustard and gray accents. Construction appears consistent with Navajo practice—four finished selvedges, intact corner warp ties, and subtle “lazy lines.” The Mexican Water notation points to the Arizona trading-post area known for strong mid-century regional designs; the “Tom Lee” name on the vintage tag likely denotes a trader or retailer rather than a documented weaver. A striking, versatile textile for floor or wall and a solid mid-century Navajo example. Mexican Water - Navajo Chapters
