Description

French Renaissance Revival Carved Oak Cabinet with Lions, c.1900, Key Included

A grand French Renaissance Revival carved oak cabinet, circa 1900, crafted in two sections for practicality yet designed with dramatic architectural presence. The upper portion features two beveled mirror-panel doors with a removable interior shelf, framed by robust turned columns and surmounted by an elegant balustrade gallery. Richly carved motifs include scrolling foliage, paneled fronts, and bold lion masks terminating in carved paws, hallmark details of the Renaissance Revival style. Brass escutcheons, paneled backboards, and dovetail-constructed drawers attest to the fine craftsmanship.

The lower case offers two drawers and twin paneled doors concealing a removable shelf, while the whole rests on a sturdy plinth base. Decorative flourishes such as the lion masks, geometric panels, and foliate carvings emphasize its historical inspiration, making this cabinet as much a statement of artistry as it is a functional storage or display piece. A working key is included.

This cabinet embodies the late 19th- to early 20th-century French fascination with reviving Renaissance grandeur, echoing the great châteaux of the Loire Valley in miniature form. Substantial in scale yet refined in detail, it would serve beautifully as a dining room buffet, a bookcase, or an impressive focal point in any traditional interior.

Condition:

Good overall, with age-appropriate wear and character throughout. Minor finish loss to the mirror panels, along with surface scuffs, scratches, and small chips expected of a piece of this age. The right lion carving shows a chip to its paw. Some panel separations and prior repairs are visible at the rear, but the cabinet remains sturdy, stable, and ready for use.
