1883 Hawaii Dime – King Kalākaua I – .900 Silver – “Umi Keneta”
This 1883 Hawaiian Dime, or Umi Keneta, represents the short-lived national coinage of the Kingdom of Hawaii under King Kalākaua I. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, it carries both symbolic and historical weight. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Kalākaua I with the inscription “KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII” and the date below. On the reverse, a crown surmounts a laurel wreath encircling the denomination “ONE DIME,” paired with the Hawaiian motto “UA MAU KE EA O KA ‘ĀINA I KA PONO” (“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”). Beneath, the inscription UMI KENETA anchors the design in the Hawaiian language.
Authorized in 1880 and minted only in 1883, this series marked Hawaii’s assertion of sovereignty before annexation by the United States in 1898. Withdrawn from circulation after 1903, most examples were redeemed and melted, leaving surviving pieces as enduring relics of Hawaii’s independent monarchy.
