This listing features a 1790 copper duit struck under the authority of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or VOC). The obverse displays the interlocking VOC monogram beneath three stars, with the date below. The reverse features the crowned lion rising from waves—identifying this coin as a product of the Zeeland provincial mint, one of four authorized to strike VOC coinage between 1726 and 1794.
Known as “The First New York Penny,” VOC duiten circulated widely in Dutch colonial territories, including New Netherland (modern-day New York). This example comes in a presentation folder and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity that outlines the historical context of the series.
