1750 Mexico 2 Reales – Ferdinand VI – El Cazador Shipwreck – ANACS Select
This coin is more than silver — it is a survivor of one of history’s most storied shipwrecks. Struck in 1750 at the Mexico City Mint under Ferdinand VI of Spain, this 2 Reales formed part of the vast treasure cargo aboard the Spanish brig El Cazador.
On January 11, 1784, El Cazador set sail from Veracruz, bound for New Orleans with nearly half a million pesos in silver coinage. Its mission was to rescue the faltering economy of Spanish Louisiana by flooding the colony with hard currency. Instead, the ship vanished in the Gulf of Mexico, consigning its treasure — and Spain’s financial hopes — to the sea.
Rediscovered by chance in 1993, the wreck yielded a sunken treasury of Spanish colonial silver. Each coin is a tangible artifact of both maritime tragedy and global trade. Certified and encapsulated by ANACS as “Select” (Cert #4149442), this piece carries the scars of the sea yet retains its defining details: the crowned Spanish arms on the obverse and the iconic “Pillars of Hercules” with the motto VTRAQUE VNUM on the reverse.
Owning an El Cazador coin is to hold a fragment of lost history — a reminder of empire, commerce, and the hazards of the open sea.
