Description

1794 Mexico 8 Reales – Charles IV – Portrait Dollar – .903 Silver

This listing offers a 1794 Spanish colonial 8 Reales, struck at the Mexico City Mint during the reign of King Charles IV. The obverse features the laureate bust of the monarch with the legend CAROLUS • IIII • DEI • GRATIA and the date below. The reverse displays the crowned Spanish arms between the Pillars of Hercules, draped with banners inscribed PLUS ULTRA, flanked by the mintmark “Mo” (Mexico City) and assayer’s initials “FM.”

The “Portrait Dollar” type replaced the earlier Pillar Dollar beginning in 1772, continuing the tradition of the 8 Reales as the world’s most widely used trade coin. Valued for its reliable weight and fineness, the 8 Reales circulated extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, where it was often accepted with chop marks from local merchants. In the United States, these coins remained legal tender until 1857 and heavily influenced the design and name of the U.S. dollar.
