This 1872 Seated Liberty Half Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint and represents one of the final years of production for this long-running denomination, which was discontinued in 1873. The obverse features Liberty seated with shield and staff, while the reverse carries the denomination “HALF DIME” within a detailed agricultural wreath. The “S” mintmark beneath the bow confirms its origin from the San Francisco Mint.
As the smallest silver coin issued by the U.S. Mint, the half dime played a key role in early American commerce. Late-date issues from branch mints, such as this 1872-S example, are especially notable among collectors.
