1869 U.S. Seated Liberty Half Dime – San Francisco Mint – .900 Silver
This 1869 Seated Liberty Half Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint, as indicated by the “S” mintmark beneath the wreath on the reverse. The obverse displays Liberty seated beside a shield, holding a liberty cap on a pole — a design created by Christian Gobrecht and used throughout the Seated Liberty series. On the reverse, the denomination “HALF DIME” is framed by a wreath composed of agricultural elements.
The Seated Liberty half dime was one of the last small-denomination silver coins in U.S. circulation before the denomination was discontinued in 1873. With a mintage under 300,000, this issue is sought after by collectors of both type coins and branch mint issues.
