This 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and features the classic design by William Kneass. The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, holding arrows and an olive branch, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination shown as “5 C.”
Issued from 1829 to 1837, the Capped Bust Half Dime represents one of the earliest standardized small silver coinage types in U.S. history, notable for its intricate engraving and transitional silver content.
