WWII German Propaganda £1 Note — Arabic Reverse, Peppiatt, 1942
Scarce World War II propaganda leaflet disguised as a Bank of England £1 note. Produced by Nazi Germany and modeled on the Peppiatt-signed £1 issue (serial H86D 729630), this facsimile was dropped over North Africa in 1942 during the El Alamein campaign. While the front imitates a genuine British banknote, the reverse carries Arabic text titled “Signs of Decay,” denouncing Britain’s declining empire and currency.
These leaflets formed part of Germany’s psychological warfare, intended to erode confidence in British rule among Arabic-speaking populations. Closely linked to the famous Operation Bernhard counterfeiting project, this piece highlights the intersection of finance, propaganda, and warfare. Highly collectible, it is referenced in British Museum holdings and specialist numismatic literature.
Condition
In good condition for its type, showing typical toning and light handling consistent with wartime distribution. The Arabic propaganda text on the reverse is clear and fully legible. Some edge wear present, but the design and details remain well defined.
Dimensions
Approx. 5.5 x 3 inches (standard Bank of England £1 format).
