Chela Veloz G Mata Ortiz Pottery Jars, Set of 3
A set of three hand-painted Mata Ortiz pottery jars by Chela Veloz G, finely crafted in the tradition of the renowned Casas Grandes revival movement of Chihuahua, Mexico. Each vessel is decorated with intricate black and red geometric and figural motifs on a buff clay ground, including stylized birds, abstract forms, and patterned panels reminiscent of ancient Paquimé designs. All three pieces are signed on the underside “Chela Veloz G.”
Mata Ortiz pottery, made famous in the late 20th century by Juan Quezada and now carried on by families such as the Veloz, has become highly collectible for its thin-walled construction, precision linework, and contemporary interpretations of pre-Columbian styles. These jars, each measuring 3 1/2 inches high by 3 1/2 inches in diameter, are a fine representation of the artistry and innovation that defines this important Mexican ceramic tradition.
