Vintage English Brass-Clad Hearth Chest with Tavern Scene
A vintage brass-clad hearth chest featuring embossed panels with a lively tavern scene in relief. The lid and front depict detailed figures gathered around a table, framed by circular border motifs, while the sides and back display a hammered brass finish. Constructed with tongue-and-groove joinery and secured with flathead screws, the piece is lined with dark-stained wood and rests on small block feet.
Though sometimes mistaken for an antique tinderbox, its larger size and construction identify it as a hearth chest or decorative firewood/coal box. Popular in mid-20th century English interiors, these chests blended utility with Old World style, often placed near the fireplace for storing kindling, coal, or blankets. Today, it serves equally well as a decorative accent or versatile storage piece, appealing to collectors of vintage brasswork and period-inspired furnishings.
Condition:
Good overall, with age-appropriate wear. The brass shows toning and patina consistent with age, including light oxidation and surface irregularities. The wood interior exhibits expected wear but remains structurally sound. Hinges intact and functional.
Dimensions:
12.25 x 18.25 x 12 inches (height x width x depth).
