Sears 5178 Bench Vise – 3½" Jaw, Swivel Base, Vintage Cast Iron
This is a vintage Sears model 5178 bench vise, featuring a 3½-inch jaw width and swivel base. Constructed of heavy cast iron in its original red finish, the vise includes flat jaws with integrated pipe-holding grooves, an anvil surface, and a rotating base with locking handle. Both sides are clearly marked “Sears 5178” and “3½,” identifying it as a mid-century utility tool offered through Sears’ well-regarded tool line.
Sears introduced its Craftsman tool brand in 1927, with many vises manufactured by contracted foundries in the United States and, later, Japan during the 1950s–1970s. This compact yet rugged vise reflects the dependable construction of that period and is a practical choice for light-to-medium duty shop work, as well as a collectible example of vintage Sears/Craftsman tools. Its manageable size makes it well-suited for hobbyists, woodworkers, or display in a vintage tool collection.
Condition
Good overall, with expected signs of use. Finish shows scattered paint wear, small chips, and areas of oxidation from normal shop handling. Jaws open and close smoothly, and the swivel base locks securely. Fully functional and ready for use.
