Lydia Quezada Black on Black Pottery Jar – Mata Ortiz
An elegant black-on-black pottery jar by Lydia Quezada, one of the most respected members of the celebrated Quezada family of Mata Ortiz, Mexico. The rounded vessel with a gently flared rim is finely decorated with incised geometric and abstract motifs, creating subtle contrasts between glossy and matte finishes. Measuring 9.5 inches tall by 7 inches in diameter, this piece demonstrates the refined balance of form and surface for which Quezada’s work is admired. The underside is signed “Lydia Quezada.”
Lydia Quezada, the youngest sister of Juan Quezada, learned directly from the master credited with reviving the ancient Casas Grandes (Paquimé) ceramic tradition. Her blackware works, such as this example, are particularly prized for their precision and artistry, blending traditional firing methods with contemporary innovation. Collectors value her pottery for both its aesthetic beauty and its significance in the broader story of Mata Ortiz ceramics.
Condition:
Good condition overall, with visible scuffing, finish wear/loss, and light shelf wear as shown in the photos. Despite these areas, the jar retains strong visual appeal and presents well.
