Native American Full-Grooved Stone Axe — Burch Catalog, 1 lb 9 oz
A Native American full-grooved stone axe, formerly cataloged under the “Burch” collection. Carved from dense dark stone, the piece displays a deeply cut groove encircling its midsection, allowing it to be hafted securely to a wooden handle. Measuring 2 x 4 x 3 ¼ inches and weighing 1 lb 9 oz, the axe has a compact, melon-like symmetry with a balanced form suited to both functional and symbolic roles.
Grooved axes of this type are among the earliest ground stone tools in North America, commonly associated with the Archaic through Woodland periods (ca. 6000 BCE–1000 CE). The full groove suggests an earlier tradition, while the pecked and ground finish reflects skilled craftsmanship. Comparable examples are held in major museum collections across New Mexico and the broader Southwest, often made from locally available volcanic or metamorphic stone. Collectors prize these implements both for their durability as tools and their cultural significance.
Condition
Good condition with surface weathering consistent with age and use. The stone shows natural pitting and minor edge wear. A darkened patch on one side represents cataloging material, where the word “Burch” is visible. The groove remains well-defined, enhancing both form and display. Please see photographs for details.
