Victorian Aesthetic Gossip Bench w/ Casters, c.1880
Victorian Aesthetic Movement gossip bench, circa 1880, with an asymmetrical design featuring a scrolled armrest opposite a decorative ball-and-spindle side panel. Crafted in solid wood with turned legs on original wood casters, the piece retains its original velvet upholstery. The wide seat and unusual form are characteristic of the conversation or “gossip” bench style, popular in the late 19th century.
Offered as is, for restoration, this example preserves its period craftsmanship and elegant detailing, making it a desirable candidate for reupholstery and repair. Once restored, it will serve as both a functional seat and a striking historical accent.
Condition
Poor condition. Frame shows scratches, chips, and finish loss, with notable wear to legs. Upholstery is original but stained, faded, and discolored. Webbing torn with loose springs, and joints are somewhat loose. Casters present but worn. Full restoration recommended.
