Hand-Painted Abstract Ceramic Vessel, Signed Jan ’90 – Cardinal & Moon Motifs
Large hand-painted ceramic vessel, signed Jan and dated 1990. Slab-built with a sculptural rectangular body and softly undulating rim, the work blends abstraction with symbolic natural motifs. Bold crimson arcs recall the plumage of a cardinal, geometric chevrons suggest rows of corn, and a circular form echoes the moon, all set against layered washes of gray and green reminiscent of falling rain. Painted over terracotta clay, the surface combines free brushwork with structured patterning, reflecting the experimental spirit of late-20th-century studio ceramics.
With its impressive scale and richly layered imagery, this vessel transcends function to stand as a sculptural artwork. Its symbolism rooted in nature and cycles of renewal makes it a compelling addition for collectors of contemporary ceramics or as a striking decorative focal point. Signed Jan ’90 along the lower edge.
