Description

Marjorie Moeser “Shifting Sands” 2014 Acrylic on Canvas 6x6

Marjorie Moeser (Canadian, Contemporary)
“Shifting Sands,” 2014
Acrylic on canvas, signed and dated on the verso.

This richly textured painting by Canadian artist Marjorie Moeser captures her signature approach to semi-abstract landscape. Executed on a compact 6 x 6 inch canvas, Shifting Sands layers vibrant strokes of golden yellow, turquoise, and deep indigo to evoke desert terrain under shifting skies. The surface is built with tactile impasto, where brush and palette knife create dynamic ridges and etched textures that suggest movement across the land. The work is finished on the edges and presented ready to hang, with the artist’s handwritten title, date, and signature on the reverse.

Marjorie Moeser is known for her vivid palette and atmospheric landscapes, inspired by the wide horizons of Canada and the New Mexico desert. Her solo exhibitions include The Edge of Somewhere (2011), The View from Here (2014), and Traces of Memory (2017) at David Kaye Gallery in Toronto, as well as the group exhibition Pushing Boundaries (2023) with the Women’s Art Association of Canada. Her paintings, often described as both lyrical and powerful, reside in private collections across North America. Shifting Sands represents a striking example of her ability to blend memory, place, and emotion into a poetic meditation on the natural world.

An intimate yet impactful piece, this work offers collectors an opportunity to acquire a fine example of Moeser’s art in a rare small-format composition.

Artist Biography: Marjorie Moeser (Canadian, Contemporary)

Marjorie Moeser is a Canadian painter best known for her vibrant semi-abstract landscapes, in which bold color and rich texture converge to capture both the physical and emotional essence of place. Her work often draws inspiration from the sweeping expanses of the New Mexico desert as well as the rhythms of the Canadian landscape, combining memory, observation, and imagination into dynamic compositions.

Moeser’s canvases are distinguished by their layered and sculptural surfaces, where acrylic paint is applied thickly and sometimes incised to create depth, movement, and a sense of geological time. She employs a full-spectrum palette—from deep indigos and purples to sun-drenched yellows and fiery oranges—to evoke shifting skies, dramatic light, and the transient moods of the natural world. This expressive technique transforms familiar landscapes into poetic meditations on nature’s vitality.

She has exhibited widely in Canada, including multiple solo shows at David Kaye Gallery in Toronto, such as The Edge of Somewhere (2011), The View from Here (2014), and Traces of Memory (2017). Her work was also featured in the 2023 group exhibition Pushing Boundaries at the Women’s Art Association of Canada. Across these exhibitions, critics and collectors alike have praised her ability to merge abstraction with a strong sense of place, transporting viewers into landscapes that balance fantasy and reality.

Moeser describes her practice as one of painting “places I know and understand very well,” rooted in lived experience but transformed through light, color, and imagination. Her paintings reside in numerous private collections and continue to resonate with audiences drawn to her ability to capture the pulse of the landscape while inviting personal reflection.
