Pair of Oaxacan Alebrijes – Dancing Rooster Figures, Signed Ventura Fabian
Expressive pair of hand-carved and painted wooden Alebrijes from San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca, signed by renowned artisan Ventura Fabian Martínez (1938–2019). Each figure portrays a rooster-headed dancer: one in blue dotted trousers and red shirt, the other in a black floral skirt with pink blouse. Both are crafted with articulated arms, allowing for lifelike dancing or embracing poses.
Ventura Fabian is celebrated as one of the great innovators of modern Oaxacan woodcarving, blending humor, fantasy, and cultural storytelling into his Alebrijes. His lively figures — from dancing chickens to devils and musicians — gained international acclaim, appearing in museum collections and publications including the Smithsonian. These rooster dancers embody his signature mix of playfulness and masterful craftsmanship, making them highly desirable for collectors of Mexican folk art.
