Oversized 1893 “Goliath” Pocket Watch, Serial #1428016 in Mantel Display
This rare oversized pocket watch, engraved “K. Bott, 11.4.1893,” represents the grand style of late 19th-century “Goliath” watches. Measuring nearly 3.75 inches across, it is far larger than standard pocket watches of the era and was likely intended as a desk or travel timepiece rather than for daily carry. The watch features a white enamel dial with bold Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, and a gilt crown, enclosed in a silver-tone case. Serial number 1428016 places it in the 1890s, from the earliest era of Goliath-style designs.
The accompanying handcrafted wooden mantel display—carved in a tambour clock style—was fitted to cradle the watch, converting it into a desk or shelf clock. German inscriptions on the reverse suggest workshop or apprentice origins. Together, the oversized watch and stand present a distinctive blend of horological history and inventive craftsmanship, offered here as a non-running example for parts, repair, or display.
Condition
Non-functional. The watch shows scratches, scuffing, and tarnish, with a 1/8" chip to the enamel dial near 10 o’clock and scratches to the crystal. The top bow/ring is missing. The wooden display has wear, scuffing, and one absent piece not visible from the front. Overall, the ensemble remains visually striking despite flaws.
