Framed USPS Black Heritage Series Stamp Collection – 21 Stamps (1978–1990s Issues)

Presented is a framed collection of 21 U.S. postage stamps from the Black Heritage Series, issued annually by the United States Postal Service beginning in 1978. This series is the longest-running commemorative program in USPS history, honoring groundbreaking African American leaders, educators, scientists, artists, athletes, and activists.

The stamps in this display include some of the earliest honorees:

  • Harriet Tubman (1978) – the first African American woman featured on a U.S. stamp.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. (1979) – civil rights leader.
  • Benjamin Banneker (1980) – scientist and inventor.
  • Whitney M. Young Jr. (1981) – civil rights leader and social worker.
  • Jackie Robinson (1982) – baseball legend.
  • Scott Joplin (1983) – composer and pianist.
  • Carter G. Woodson (1984) – historian, “Father of Black History.”
  • Mary McLeod Bethune (1985) – educator and activist.
  • Sojourner Truth (1986) – abolitionist and women’s rights advocate.
  • Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable (1987) – founder of Chicago.
  • James Weldon Johnson (1988) – author of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
  • A. Philip Randolph (1989) – labor organizer and activist.
  • Ida B. Wells (1990) – journalist and anti-lynching crusader.
  • Jan E. Matzeliger (1991) – inventor who revolutionized shoe manufacturing.
  • W.E.B. Du Bois (1992) – scholar and civil rights activist.
  • Along with Percy Lavon Julian, Ernest E. Just, Bessie Coleman, Malcolm X, and others from the early years of the series.

Designed by leading artists, including Thomas Blackshear II, these stamps reflect a mix of illustrated portraits and later monochromatic designs, marking an important evolution in U.S. philatelic art. The collection is mounted on a dark mat with a brass title plate and housed in a walnut-tone wooden frame with plexiglass.

Condition:
Good overall. Some debris is visible behind the plexiglass, and both the frame and plexiglass have surface scratches. The stamps themselves appear clean and vibrant.
