1827 Mary Humphry Needlework Sampler, Framed
Charming early American needlework sampler, worked in 1827 by Mary Humphry at the age of eleven. The composition features alphabets, decorative borders, floral motifs, birds, animals, and angelic figures, anchored by a large central house and floral basket. The inscription reads: “Mary Humphry her work done in the eleventh year of her age 1827.”
Samplers of this era are treasured as both works of folk art and as personal records of education and domestic life. The combination of alphabets, pictorial imagery, and a fully signed and dated inscription makes this an appealing example for collectors of early textiles and Americana. Presented in a 19th-century wooden frame with gilt liner, this piece offers both decorative appeal and historical interest.
Condition
In good antique condition with toning to the linen ground and thread fading consistent with nearly 200 years of age. The frame shows chips, scuffing, and old repairs, with authentic patina throughout. Wire on reverse for hanging. Please review photos for details.
