Description

Georg Petersens Danish Rosewood Dining Table, Chrome Base, 1 Leaf

A striking mid-century modern dining table attributed to Georg Petersens Møbelfabrik, Denmark, circa 1960s. The rectangular top features dramatic book-matched Brazilian rosewood veneers, exhibiting the rich depth of color and flowing grain patterns that define the best Scandinavian rosewood furniture of the era. A polished chrome trestle base provides strong architectural contrast, balancing warmth with a sleek modernist sensibility. The design is both functional and elegant, with a concealed 23.5" extension leaf that expands the length from 63" to 86.5", offering flexibility for dining and entertaining.

Although the original label is absent, the table’s proportions, materials, and construction are fully consistent with documented Georg Petersens examples, and it comes from a knowledgeable consignor’s collection. Comparable designs from this workshop are sometimes associated with Poul Nørreklit, whose work shares the same refined minimalism and focus on exotic veneers paired with steel. This table embodies the sophistication of Danish modern design while offering practical versatility, making it as relevant in a contemporary interior as it was when first produced.

Shown here with Katavolos, Kelley & Littell for Laverne “T” Chairs (offered separately in this same auction), the pairing highlights its design pedigree and enduring appeal. Pieces of this quality and scale are increasingly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts, especially as restrictions on Brazilian rosewood have made surviving mid-century examples more rare and desirable.

Condition

In good condition overall, with light scuffing and surface wear consistent with age. The extension leaf displays visible discoloration compared to the main top. A few tiny veneer chips are present along the edges, as pictured. Chrome base is sturdy and retains its polish with only minor wear.
