Description

Suzanne Kane Signed Ceramic Tower Sculpture with Fruits, 2001

This remarkable hand-sculpted ceramic tower by Suzanne Kane (signed and dated 2001) offers an inspired blend of artistry, symbolism, and ingenuity. Rising 30 inches tall, the tiered form is richly textured with spirals and striations in warm desert tones, anchored on a leafy green base and crowned with a flame-like finial. Beneath the removable top lies a velvet-lined hidden compartment, adding a functional surprise to the sculpture’s striking presence. Five hand-painted ceramic fruits nest within the tower’s arched chambers, transforming the piece into an ever-shifting tableau that speaks of abundance, growth, and renewal.

Beyond its playful surface lies a deeper resonance: Kane’s work draws on the endurance of desert flora, balancing strength with delicacy, whimsy with reverence. This tower is not only a sculptural object but also a temple-like meditation on resilience and beauty, making it an extraordinary centerpiece for any collection of contemporary ceramics.

Artist Biography:
Suzanne Kane (b. Michigan) earned her BFA in sculpture from Michigan State University and her MFA in ceramics from New Mexico State University, where the desert landscape profoundly shaped her artistic vision. Her work merges architectural structure with organic form, often exploring the resilience of wild flora in the Chihuahuan Desert. Kane’s sculptures—frequently a combination of welded steel and ceramics—are held in major collections including the Archie Bray Foundation, the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA), and public installations at the New Mexico State Capitol, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and the Albuquerque Library System. Profiled in Ceramics Monthly in 2001, she is recognized as an influential voice in contemporary studio ceramics, admired for her ability to balance playfulness with profound symbolic meaning.

Condition: Excellent, with no cracks or chips. Signed and dated “Suzanne Kane 2001” on the underside.
