Early 20th-Century Leather-Bound Edgar Allan Poe Editions — 1902 Arnheim & 1927 Black Volumes
Offered here is a lot of three leather-bound volumes of Edgar Allan Poe’s works, printed in the early 20th century. Poe (1809–1849), master of the macabre and pioneer of modern detective fiction, remains one of America’s most influential literary figures. His works of poetry and prose shaped Gothic literature and inspired generations of writers worldwide.
This set includes:
- The Works of Edgar Allan Poe in One Volume: Complete Tales and Poems — Walter J. Black, 1927. Includes a biographical introduction by Hervey Allen, noted novelist and biographer of Poe (Anthony Adverse).
- The Works of Edgar Allan Poe: Tales — G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1902 copyright (designs). Bound in leather, containing Poe’s hallmark short stories, which laid the groundwork for horror, psychological thrillers, and detective fiction.
- The Works of Edgar Allan Poe: Poems — G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1902 copyright (designs and introduction). Features Poe’s poetry, including The Raven, Annabel Lee, and Ulalume, among the most enduring works of American verse.
The 1902 Putnam’s Sons editions reflect the era’s interest in finely produced literary collections, often bound in decorative leather for private libraries. The 1927 Walter J. Black edition consolidated Poe’s complete writings into an accessible single volume with scholarly framing. Together, these volumes capture the transitional moment when Poe’s works were moving from popular Gothic tales into canonized American classics.
Condition
Fair, age-worn condition. All three volumes show heavy wear to spines and edges. Tales has the spine detached on one side; The Works spine is detached entirely. Covers display surface wear and losses. Pages throughout show foxing, toning, and age-appropriate handling wear consistent with books of this period. While fragile, interiors remain largely intact. These are suitable as reference, collector’s volumes, or display copies rather than fine-condition examples.
Size
Lot of 3 leather-bound books, octavo size.
