1890 John Grinsell & Sons Cut Glass & Sterling Silver Inkwell, Birmingham
A fine Victorian cut glass inkwell with sterling silver mounted hinged lid, crafted by John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham, in 1890. The body is richly decorated with a diamond-cut pattern that sparkles beautifully in the light, while the silver lid bears an ornate engraved monogram. The collar is fully hallmarked with the Birmingham assay marks, lion passant for sterling, date letter for 1890, and the maker’s mark J.G&S.
This piece exemplifies the elegant craftsmanship of late 19th-century English silversmithing and would have been a distinguished accessory on a Victorian writing desk. Both decorative and functional, it is a desirable collectible for enthusiasts of antique silver and period deskware.
Condition
Very good antique condition overall. The silver lid shows some light surface wear and tarnish consistent with age, while the cut glass remains crisp and clear, with only minor fleabites visible on close inspection. The hinge is secure, and the engraved monogram retains excellent definition.
Dimensions
Approx. 3.5 inches high x 3.75 inches wide.
