Description

Mexican Hand-Carved Stone Chess Set with Inlaid Board, 14"

Handcrafted in Mexico, this striking stone chess set features a 14-inch inlaid board of alternating pink marble and gray banded onyx squares. The 32 hand-carved figures are sculpted in contrasting colors: creamy white stone pieces set against richly veined rose marble pieces. Each figure is carved in a bold, geometric style influenced by pre-Columbian design, with stepped pyramid-like forms and abstracted figures. The natural veining and inclusions in the stone add unique character, making this a standout decorative and playable set.

These Mexican stone chess sets were popular export pieces in the mid-to-late 20th century, admired for their craftsmanship and striking materials. They remain highly collectible, serving equally well as functional game sets or conversation-piece displays.

Condition:

In fair to good condition overall. The chessboard shows chips along the edges, and all pieces exhibit small chips consistent with age and use. Two pawns are replacement pieces. The surface polish remains intact, and the set presents attractively despite the noted wear. Please review photos for details.
